About Smog of the Sea ::

The Smog of the Sea chronicles a 1-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea.

Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited onboard an unusual crew to help him study the sea: renowned surfers Keith & Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher woman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham become citizen scientists on a mission to assess the fate of plastics in the world’s oceans. After years of hearing about the famous “garbage patches” in the ocean’s gyres, the crew is stunned to learn that the patches are a myth: the waters stretching to the horizon are clear blue, with no islands of trash in sight. But as the crew sieves the water and sorts through their haul, a more disturbing reality sets in: a fog of microplastics permeates the world’s oceans, trillions of nearly invisible plastic shards making their way up the marine food chain. You can clean up a garbage patch, but how do you stop a fog?

Using nostalgic super-8 footage, sparkling underwater cinematography, an original score by Jack Johnson and shipmate Simon Beins, and live action footage of the crew’s research, The Smog of the Sea provides a new perspective on the once pristine oceans, and makes an artful call to action for rethinking the scourge of the sea — single use plastic. Directed by Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Ian Cheney (King Corn, The City Dark, The Search for General Tso).

To some, the ocean is a fearsome and dangerous place. But to others, it’s a limitless world of fun, freedom and opportunity where life can be lived to the full. A documentary presented by Patagonia and directed by Keith Malloy, Fishpeople tells the stories of a unique cast of characters who have dedicated their lives to the sea. From surfers and spearfishers to a long-distance swimmer, a former coal miner and a group of at-risk kids on the streets of San Francisco, it’s a film about the transformative effects of time spent in the ocean—and leaving behind our limitations to find deeper meaning in the saltwater wilderness that lies just beyond the shore.

Hobie Surf ::Hobie Surfboards Welcomes Michael Arenal to the Shaping Team

Working on the floor of any Hobie Surf Shop has built in advantages. An industry leading shop discount for the staff, access to some of the best surfboards on the planet, decades of history to immerse yourself in, events,  teams, ect. But, if you are an up and coming shaper looking to hone your craft, there is only one location to start at, Hobie Dana Point. Master surfboard shaper, Gary Larson, has his room right in the store and welcomes people to watch him shape through a large picture window 5 days a week. That is where we all met the humble and wildly likable Michael Arenal.

Growing up in Laguna Hills and surfing SanO, Churches and Middles on the regular, he is instantly recognizable in the water by his tall lanky frame riding with an easy smooth style. With natural artistic abilities, he was accepted to and attended the Laguna College of Art and Design. Shortly after enrolling, he saw an Alaia board at the beach and thought it might be something he could make for himself. The building process for that first board struck the spark for shaping that brought him to Hobie Dana Point. Working on the floor, he would take every chance he got to poke his head into the shaping room and watch as Terry Martin, Tyler Warren and Gary turned foam into fine lined surfboards.

After a year or two on the floor, and asking as many questions of the shapers he could, he started out on his own under the “ARENAL SURFCRAFT” label. Taken under the wing of one of the world’s greatest asymmetrical surfboard shapers, Donny Brink, Michael has grown astronomically as a shaper and artist of the craft over the past few years. At this point he has made everything from handplanes, longboards, fish, shortboards, semi-guns, asymms, and every imaginable custom design you could hope for. “We are excited as a company to welcome him into the shaping room” said Mark Johnson Hobie Shaper and Designer. “I personally can’t wait to see what creations he will come up with under the Hobie label.”  “It will be fun to see Michael’s outside perspective as young and upcoming surfer/shaper-I look forward to working with him.”

GAME ON!!!!!

GAME ON!!!!!

It’s Back!! Our annual Surf Swap & Sale at our Dana Point Hobie Surf Shop (only, in Dana Point!!) is set to go off this Memorial Day Weekend! We LOVE this sale!! It’s our chance to not only help you clean out those used surfboards in your garage, making room for a whole new rack of boards… but it’s our chance to buy those used boards off of you and have a brand new, though slightly pre-loved, quiver of our own!

You set the price for your boards, with a little help from us, and when it sells, 10% of the selling price will be donated to Surfers Healing (see video below to learn more about this incredible organization)! Be wise in your selection of boards to bring down, surfboards 7’6″ and over sell the fastest and usually for the best price. SUP’s also do well at the swap, but as far as shortboards go, it’s hit and miss on how they fare. We also have had a strong turnout of folks looking for classics and vintage boards, too! Remember, cleaned up, unwaxed boards look the best in the racks. You want your girl to stand out amongst the sea of other boards, so shine her up nice and pretty!

Tell your friends, and especially tell that board hoarder you know, to bring their boards on down to our Dana Point Shop (again the sale is only at the Dana Point Shop) bright and early on May the 22nd. We will start taking in boards as early as 8:45am. When you fill out your forms, make sure to give us an easy phone number to reach you at, just in case we have an offer on the table that you want to hear. We have seen people come up cash in hand, looking to get a bit off the marked price only to leave when we can’t get in contact with the seller. Price your boards fair and be willing to STOKE someone out on a new ride! It’s crazy fun to watch people find the new log of their dreams at a price they can afford!

Stop in through out the weekend and see how your boards are selling, and make sure you shop the SALE! We go BaNaNaS marking items down!! Our outside parking lot will be full of great deals, and we’ll have special markdowns inside too! Seriously, you will Not be disappointed with this sale and swap! Make sure you are ready with phone in hand on Sunday May 24th around 3:30ish, just in case we didn’t sell your boards. You will have to pick them up again that night by 5pm. But, trust us, we do our best to sell them all!!

Ok, if you have any other questions, call our Dana Point Shop at 949-496-2366, otherwise, We’ll See You at The Swap!!!

Hobie Shop :: Holiday Events at Our Shops!! So Many Reasons to Come On By!!

Come On Down to Ho Ho Hobie!!

Come On Down to Ho Ho Hobie!!

Hobie Surf Shops have roots that tie directly to the Orange County beach community. It’s more than just a place where our shops are located. For us, it is where our lineage is the deepest. Laguna is home to the house where our founding Father, Hobie Alter, crafted his first surfboards in a front yard on PCH. Dana Point is where our very first shop was born 60 years ago. Orange County and it’s residents are in the soul of everything we do.

Three years ago, we decided to up our commitment to our local communities by going all out for the shop town’s holiday festivals!! Last weekend you guys blew the doors off our San Clemente shops for Puttin’ On the Glitz! Both our stores were packed with treats, live music and a steady stream of stoked locals! From Friday – Sunday you will get a chance to hit up Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Corona Del Mar for wintery good times! Here is a run down on what is happening, where and when. Can’t wait to see you all!!

Laguna Beach Hobie ::  Friday December 5th from 6pm-9pm. Hospitality Night!!

At Hospitality Night, a Laguna tradition where Forest Ave is shut down for wintery type activites, including the arrival of Santa! The wheel is going to be BONKERS with prizes from Catch Surf, O’Neill, Vissla, PJ Salvage, ect…! So come ready to spin, snack, and leave with a tiger painted on your face, because this night is ALL for some very fantastic kids. The band Moonshine is playing sets all night starting at 6pm. We will have treats and drinks, too. Bring the family!!

Dana Point Hobie :: Saturday December 6th from 10am-5pm. Winterfest!!

Three words : GIANT Snow Pile!! Yes, it’s that time of year when the city of Dana Point shuts down the Hennessey’s parking lot and turns it into a Santa Party Fest! They create a massive mound of snow for the kids to play in, bring in a petting zoo, and the man in the big red suit, SANTA is here!!! In our shop we will be hosting a complimentary pancake breakfast with a nice side of oj from 10am-11:30am (or, for as long as the batter lasts). The rest of the day we will have popcorn and treats!
