A waterfall starts with just one drop… And look what comes from that.
My friend Abbey Larson said that to me in a conversation over coffee about six months ago. It hasn’t left my brain since. It actually seems as if from the moment she said it, everywhere I look I see little drops of water making a waterfall. I might be getting a little too new age-y, so let me explain..
A perfect example of a “little drop” was this photo I stumbled across this morning of window washers at a London Children’s Hospital dressed up as Spiderman. When the kids in treatment look out the window, they see Superheroes instead of just the normal everyday washers in overalls. Just imagine how stoked the kids get!! There really isn’t any reason to do it, other than just to make the world a little brighter for a child going through a rough day in a hospital. Hence, a “little drop”, meaning it might not seem like much to you or I, but to the children in the beds it is an exciting silly momentary escape from a day of pokes and prods.
A second example of a drop, is Hurley’s H2o initiative, and the “simple” idea of getting clean water to every single person who needs it…
This is the way Hurley describes their program and the inspiration behind it…
“1 in 6 people in the world do not have access to clean water, it compels us to ask: What can we do to change this?
It started in 2008 with the founding of H2O, Hurley’s water initiative. The mission? To provide clean water for everyone. Since then, we’ve partnered with Jon Rose and Waves For Water, who are saving lives one filter at a time on the frontlines of countries like Haiti, Brazil and India. We’ve aligned with Evan Marks and The Ecology Center, a local organic farm that inspires the next generation of water activists. And we are raising awareness as a company. With surfing icon and humanitarian Rob Machado as our source of inspiration, water awareness is now a part of Hurley’s everyday conversation and helps inform our decision-making.
We will continue to strive for our goal five, 10 or even 20 years from now. But there are real solutions to this real problem, and it starts with each one of us.
We ask you to join us in our quest to bring clean water to the world. Make a pledge , join Clean Water Couriers or simply use a little less water today. There is no task too large or too small to help keep the planet hydrated and healthy.”
Unreal, Right??!!! Myself and a group of 11 are on our way to Malawi, Africa. We will not only be bringing a school and a playground, we will also be Clean Water Couriers! We will be bringing along somewhere around 50 Community Filters (15 graciously donated by our friends at Hurley! Thanks Hurley!!). When you look at the Sawyer water filters and the total simplicity of use and potential to be life changing for a community, it becomes very hard to not want to bring at least one along on your next surf trip to a place with not the safest drinking water. It is a $50 way to be a drop that starts a waterfall!
Today when you go out and venture through your day; try and think of one way that you can start a waterfall. Whether it is as simple as picking up some trash off the ground and canning it, or something as complicated as being part of ending extreme hunger in the world, find a way to make your drop make an impact.
