Everyday I read something new about what is “good” for you. One day it’s “orange juice is all you need”, the next day orange juice is out. One day it’s “flax seeds are key to your health”, the next day it’s flax seeds are overrated. One day “running is the best thing you can do”, the next day it’s running will ruin your knees and feet don’t do it, man!! “Berries are amazing”, no, berries are full of pesticides… the list goes on and on. In the morning something is “good”, and by the afternoon, the shade throwers have cast doubt all over the next “good” thing you were ready to try.
However, one thing has stayed a constant “good” thing through the whole of my 38 years (and I’m pretty sure before I was born too), and that is that Giving is Good! We all know the feeling of a “helper’s high”, the excitement we get when doing something nice for others. Sometimes it is as simple as holding the elevator door; sometimes more complex, like going out of the country to build a home for a family in need. It can be as easy as giving up that perfect right to a beginner surfer (oh, and it’s an important part of giving to not get upset if they fall or go straight.. :)), or buying a pair of TOMS. Even when your giving is just a tiny thing, the feeling of “good” can last the whole day!
There are virtually hundreds of ways you can experience “good” on any given day. Put extra quarters in the parking meter to put a smile on the next parkers face. Purchase products that are Fair Trade, like Zulu Grass jewelry at our shops. It is made by women in Africa and is bought at a fair price, ensuring that the artisan can practice their craft and put food on the table for their families. When you are at the beach, make it a goal to pick up at least 10 pieces of trash. Give credit where credit is due; meaning, if someone is knocking it out of the park at your job, make sure you give a glowing report to the bosses on their behalf. Or you can make it the most simple one of them all and give a friend a genuine full of LoVE hug! Just pick something, and do it! Your heart will thank you!
Whatever you do today, and wherever you go, make it a day full of “good”!!
