***PRESS RELEASE FROM DOHENY LONGBOARD SURFING ASSOCIATION***
Sign Ups Now Open for Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s
17th Annual Menehune Championships
It is true. Every summer at Doheny State Beach, Menehunes are waking up from their long winter naps and start surfing again at Doheny Beach. Why does this phenomena take place each year? The answer is simple, the menehunes are practicing their surf techniques to compete in the Annual Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s Menehune Surf Championships scheduled for Saturday, June 22nd.

About 20 yards North of Tower 13 at Doheny State Beach, you will find the surf break known as The Boneyard.
The contest begins promptly at 7:30 AM and is open to boys and girls (menehunes) with divisions 8 and under up to 17 years of age. Hundreds of young competitors are expected to participate. Applications and additional information can be picked up at local surf shops throughout Orange County, California, including Hobie Surf Shops, or downloaded from the Association’s website at: www.dohenylongboardsurfingassociation.com

“The annual Menehune contest is as exciting for parents and family as it is for the kids. It provides kids with a fun and safe environment for competing and making new friends.” said, Mark Gale, President of the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association.
Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is proud again this year to have Hobie Surf Shops sponsoring the event. Hobie will provide early check-in, t-shirts and a barbeque to start the event beginning Friday, June 21st from 6-8pm at the Dana Point Hobie Surf Shop, located at 34174 Pacific Coast Highway. You can click HERE to see a slideshow of last year’s check-in, BBQ, and a bit of the contest! A new sponsor this year RWorld Surf & Skate of San Clemente, has graciously donated a surfboard for this years raffle.
The event features raffles and music throughout the day with an awards ceremony following the end of the competition. Mark Gale further states, “This event is all about enjoying the beach, friends & family while having fun in the surf. We hope these kids will fondly remember their time spent at Doheny with their fellow surfers and families for years to come.”

Contest entry is $50 dollars and proceeds from club contests help fund Ronald McDonald House and several ongoing charity outreach programs, including Doheny State Park.
Surfers will compete in 15 minute heats. The scoring is based on a 10 point system that integrates wave selection, length of ride, surfing moves and style. Judges are all Doheny Longboard members who have a long history of working within this type of scoring system. For more information and to find out how you can be involved as either a surfing Menehune or as a volunteer, please email the Contest Coordinator at – MC250C@aol.com .
* The Doheny Longboarding Surfing Association (D.L.S.A.) is an organization dedicated to board surfing in a clean and natural environment. In relation to that philosophy, the D.L.S.A. will act as a support group for other organizations with similar views and objectives. PR contact: Denny Michael at Dahuna@yahoo.com

I LOVE looking through the video collection our friends at The Surfing Heritage & Culture Center have up on their You Tube channel. I always stumble on to a gem… like the below priceless 10 minute video clip of Dana Point in the 1930′s. Unreal to see a blank canvas. Rugged, stunning, unspoiled, majestic, free coastline. Enjoy.

This is a precious little piece of surfing history submitted by Duncan Wilson. Ever wonder what Dana Point looked like back before the harbor, and before the crowds? I’ll give you a hint–there aren’t any crowds! Take a look!

Every year at this time, you can hear the sounds of dads grumbling across the Earth, “Don’t Get Me Anything For Father’s Day, I Don’t Need Anything….” Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. We heard ya, but we aren’t going to listen! We are going to get you something, you deserve it for being the awesome dads you are. Especially if we are talking about my own long suffering dad. The poor man has a full head of white hair because of me and my youthful shenanigans!! You can bet, I’m going to get him something great from Hobie this year!!
And, since my dad, like yours, is insistent that I not get him anything, he hasn’t even given me a hint as to what he would like. So, yesterday I went into one of our five shops, I talked to the warehouse guys, and I looked all over our online www.hobiesurfshop.com site and picked what I think might be the best picks for your Father’s Day 2013. Enjoy!!

No question. Hands down. The PERFECT gift for any dad who surfs is a brand new custom made surfboard! Swing into Hobie Dana Point and talk to shaping master, Gary Larson, and hook your dad up with the new whip of his dreams.

Remember that green steel bottle your grandpa used to bring fishing while he was wearing a nice pair of stealthy frames? We got them! Stanley Classic Flasks and LEGENDARY classic personal thermos. The thermos keeps drinks hot or cold for 15 hours. Hobie polarized fish finding sunglasses, or authentic Ray-Ban Avaitors will please even the saltiest of sea dogs.

Did all the trouble you got into in your youth cause your dads hair to fall off?? Then style him out in a new hat! Brixton are our favorites.

Easiest gifts since FOREVER…. a new button up from Reyn Spooner or Quiksilver Waterman’s Collection. Click the photo to start shopping online at http://www.hobiesurfshop.com

Help your dad relive his favorite wave. Frame a photo of him, wrap it up and sit down for a cup of coffee (in a Hobie mug, of course!) and have him tell you all about his best waves. Shop Hobie mugs and water bottles online at http://www.hobiesurfshop.com by clicking this photo, shop unique frames in all five Hobie Surf Shops.

If your dad is realllly old school, he is probably already riding a Paipo board, but in case he hasn’t replaced it in a few decades, it is time for a new one. DXTR Paipo board at Hobie Surf Shop in dana Point.

Did your pop shred paper thin shortboards in the 90′s?? Does he still charge Lowers daily? Get him anything made by …Lost, he’ll be sure to block for you next time you paddle out. Shop …Lost in stores or online now at http://www.hobiesurfshop.com by clicking the photo.

If your dad simply has everything, we know he probably doesn’t have these, yet! Mark Cunningham signature fins from DaFin.
Happy Father’s Day!!! Hope it is an amazing one!!! Dad, if you are reading this… Sorry about all the white hair!!

Join in on our FuN Free Hobie Stand Up Paddle Demo this Thursday, June 6th, at Baby Beach in the Dana Point Harbor! Along with our usual day of goodtimes on the water demoing our 2013 line of Hobie SUP’s, our amazingly talented Team Rider, Byron Kurt, will be doing two very special FREE SUP clinics. One class for Beginners and one class for Race enthusiasts! These classes are usually fee based, so don’t miss out on a chance to learn all the skills you need to survive the SUP jungle FREE of charge!!
Before we share details on the day, we should tell you a few things about who Byron Kurt, or as we affectionately call him here at Hobie, Grandpa, is. Byron is a Master Class Level Instructor with the WPA (World Paddle Association), and much like Sy Sperling and The Hair Club For Men, Byron is not only a client at the WPA he is also the President of the WPA. For the past 35 (yes, 35!!!) years, Byron, has been a Team Rider for Hobie. He has competed for us in Sailing, Surfing, Wind Surfing, and Stand Up Paddling. Out of the water Grandpa is no joke either. An Iron Man Triathlete and one of the best golfer’s and golf instructors we know, Byron was born to be in competition. A tough mental game and an ‘if your not pushing yourself to be the best you can be, why are you out there’ attitude complete the top athlete that is Byron Kurt.
Going to a class with Byron is sure to improve your skills in and out of the water. Below are the details of the day….
Details of the Day ::
10am :: Our demo hits the water. Come on down and paddle our 2013 Hobie SUP line. We provide the board and the paddle for all those looking to give paddling a go, purchase their first board, or upgrade their equipment. Paddlers must be over 18.
11am – 11:30am :: Stand Up Paddle Beginner Class scheduled. Please arrive for this class by 10:50, as the class starts promptly at 11am. We are meeting in front of the Hobie tent at the North end of Baby Beach. We will have a limited number of boards and paddles to borrow on a first come first served basis. Don’t worry if we run out, you will learn TONS in the sand and have plenty of time to get on the water after the class concludes with our Hobie Demo team assisting. You are welcome to bring and use your own equipment. Topics covered will be : basic paddle techniques, paddling safe in all water conditions, efficiency of paddle stroke, and getting the best experience out of your day Stand Up Paddling. This class is GREAT for people in their first year in the sport, that friend who is always bugging you to take them for a paddle, and anyone looking to gain knowledge from a pro.
11:30am – 11:45am :: Question & Answer time and on water practice for Beginner Class with Byron and our Hobie Demo Team.
Noon – 12:30pm :: Race Clinic scheduled. Please arrive for this class, with you, your board and paddle in hand in front of the Hobie Tent at the North end of Baby Beach no later than 11:50am for a prompt noon start. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own board and paddle, but we will have a few to borrow if you have to do a quick lunch break trip and don’t have time to gather your equipment. Also, you will learn TONS on the sand, so if getting on the water is out of the question due to time, come anyway. You are guaranteed to leave with new technique or strategy. Topics Covered will be : utilizing conditions to maximize your results, starts, avoiding hitting the wall/bonking, and fostering a tough mental game on race day. This class is great for ANY paddler looking to improve their overall results, wether you are a seasoned veteran racer or someone thinking about competing for the first time. (Side note :: I’m taking the class because I’m thinking I may want to train/enter a prone paddling race, and I know Byron’s tips from a golf lesson with him are tips I have carried through other sports! So, I’m coming to learn too! )
12:30pm – 12:45pm :: Question and Answer time with Byron. Remember, Byron is a TOP competitor in many fields, so feel free to ask questions about whatever is on your mind.
12:45pm – 4pm :: We finish out our usual day of on water demoing of our 2013 Hobie SUP line. You are welcome to stay all day with us and try out all the tips and tricks you learned in the clinics!
We can’t wait to see you!!! If you have any questions, email Tracey@hobie.com and I will do my best to answer them.

May 28, 2013 Full Sun, No Gloom. Water Temp 70! Ample Parking??! Looks to Be a Glorious Summer on Tap!!!
Does anything in the world make you go “WooOoooOooOo!!!!!!” more than Summertime? And, this summer (ok, technically ‘Late-Spring’) of 2013 is off to a major glorious start! I haven’t seen so much as a smattering of May Gray and I believe that we won’t have even a touch of June Gloom either. While that might feel a bit like wishful thinking, with the water temperatures already at 70, it is a possibility!!!
So, since our BFF Summer seems to be coming in HoT, we figured we better get our brick and mortar Hobie Surf Shops ready and our online retail space ( www.hobiesurfshop.com ) ready too! We are stocked with every need you can imagine for a summer full of goodtimes. Everything from the best bikinis and boardshorts, the best surfboards, the best sandals, the best beach chairs, the best of just about everything except the kitchen sink….. actually, maybe we shouldn’t give our accessories buyer, Tori, any ideas or next year we might just have a kitchen sink or three in stock too! ;) To give you a little look inside what we have on offer for Summer 2013, we asked Connor and Hunter to give you a tour of our Laguna Beach Hobie Shop! It’s just about the best 4 minutes you will spend looking at your computer today! Enjoy, then come in and see us in person or shop us online!!

It’s Back!! Our annual Surf Swap & Sale at our Dana Point Hobie Surf Shop (only, in Dana Point!!) is set to go off this Memorial Day Weekend! We LOVE this sale!! It’s our chance to not only help you clean out those used surfboards in your garage, making room for a whole new rack of boards… but it’s our chance to buy those used boards off of you and have a brand new, though slightly pre-loved, quiver of our own!
You set the price for your boards, with a little help from us, and when it sells, 10% of the selling price will be donated to the Dana Hills High School ‘Dolphin Force’. Be wise in your selection of boards to bring down, surfboards 7’6″ and over sell the fastest and usually for the best price. SUP’s also do well at the swap, but as far as shortboards go, it’s hit and miss on how they fare. We also have had a strong turnout of folks looking for classics and vintage boards, too! Remember, cleaned up, unwaxed boards look the best in the racks. You want your girl to stand out amongst the sea of other boards, so shine her up nice and pretty!
Tell your friends, and especially tell that board hoarder you know, to bring their boards on down to our Dana Point Shop (again the sale is only at the Dana Point Shop) bright and early on May the 24th. We will start taking in boards as early as 8:30am. When you fill out your forms, make sure to give us an easy phone number to reach you at, just in case we have an offer on the table that you want to hear. We have seen people come up cash in hand, looking to get a bit off the marked price only to leave when we can’t get in contact with the seller. Price your boards fair and be willing to STOKE someone out on a new ride! It’s crazy fun to watch people find the new log of their dreams at a price they can afford!
Stop in through out the weekend and see how your boards are selling, and make sure you shop the SALE! We go BaNaNaS marking items down!! Our outside parking lot will be full of great deals, and we’ll have special markdowns inside too! Seriously, you will Not be disappointed with this sale and swap! Make sure you are ready with phone in hand on Sunday May 26th around 4ish, just in case we didn’t sell your boards. You will have to pick them up again that night by 5pm. But, trust us, we do our best to sell them all!!
Ok, if you have any other questions, call our Dana Point Shop at 949-496-2366, otherwise, We’ll See You at The Swap!!!
