San Clemente’s 37th annual Ocean Festival was THE place to be all weekend long! Team Hobie was out in full force competing in events that tested your true grit in and out of the ocean. Everything from the extremely popular splash and dash (that is a 400 meter swim and a 400 meter run), to surf contests, SUP races, lifeguard contests, to the ultra grueling dory races… there was an event for every level in the water. If getting wet wasn’t your thing, you could just experience the weekend enjoying sand sculpting, a fishing derby, a woody car show, a surf art exhibit, and of course, The 21st Annual Great Rubber Duck Race!
HOBIE SURF SHOP ANNOUNCES SHOP AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Since our founding in 1954, Hobie Surf Shops have been a place where “Having a Hobie Day” isn’t just a tag line, it’s a way of life. With that in mind, we wanted to create a team of individuals to spread our vibe throughout our local communities.
From Hobie Surf Shop Ambassador director, Andy Cowell “The Hobie Surf Shops Ambassador Program’s (HAP) mission is to support watermen and women; young and old who embody the Hobie lifestyle. We define that lifestyle as a person who leads a vibrant, active, adventurous life, either in the ocean or on land; is conscientious and committed to their community, the environment, and life in general. HAP is designed as a support for exemplary people who pursue greatness in their endeavors while promoting respect for all things water. Our desire is to create brand representatives who are not only accessible to the community, but who will effortlessly spread the Hobie way of life.
HAP is a grassroots program designed to generate a buzz with local athletes and Hobie customers. Its representatives are provided with team attire, and an annual stipend for the purchase of clothing and gear of each ambassador’s choosing to field test and wear will also be given. Each Ambassador is placed on the Hobie Surf Shops “Friends and Family” listing. This entitles the participant to special discounts on purchases in any of the five Hobie Surf Shops. Lastly, HAP members will attend and participate in select Hobie Surf Shops sponsored events.”
Our first wave of HAP Team members are Gary Larson, Jennifer Holcomb, Jim Sanders, Keaton Rose, Mark Carslile, Mike Skelly, Rachael Tilly, and Tracey Engelking. Each person on this list participates in multiple water disciplines, is active in community service, and represents the core values of Hobie Surf Shop. From sailing, long and shortboard surfing, outrigger paddling, water polo, SUP surfing and racing, skateboarding, body surfing, prone paddling, and more, our new team will be responsible for spreading our love of all things water.

I know right where I will be posted up starting tomorrow; the United States Police and Fire Championships surfing competition is on at Churches (in the event info, they are calling the location “Camp Pendelton”, but we know it as Church). Three days of shortboarding, longboarding, and SUP! The surf events at The United States Police and Fire Championships (USPFC) are open to active or retired law enforcement and fire service personnel from an eligible agency within the USA. So if that is you, I hope to see you in the water!!
