We are so used to our girl Rachael Tilly doing things like this…..
…. that we sometimes forget how much she accomplishes outside of the water! That’s why we are all so stoked to see that OC Register Family Magazine (OCFamily.com) not only named Rachael as one of their Top 20 Shining Students for 2013, she also got the cover!
Each year, OC Register Family, searches Orange County to find the best and brightest students. They talk to coaches and school administrators, and seek nominations from the public. When they are through, they have a list of the of the top youth in the area who excel in all areas from academics, the arts, leadership, athletics, and, of course, community service.
2013′s group of students are incredible, and Rachael is front and center! The group includes students who are bound for Harvard and MIT, a Junior Olympic Gold medalist in fencing, a clean water activist, 11th grade twin sisters who are authors of 4 Sci-Fi books, a two time OC Debate League Golden Gavel Award winner, and many more accomplished kids. Though they all participate in differing fields, what they all have in common is a desire to do their absolute best at all times, and inspire others around them to do the same.
“Since she entered her first surfing contest at the age of 6, Rachael Tilly has racked up an impressive list of wins. She has clinched the Interscholastic Surfing Federation’s Middle School State Championship three times and holds five West Coast titles from the Western Surfing Association.
Rachael is also the youngest woman to qualify for the Association of Surfing Professionals’ 2013 World Longboard Tour. She will travel to compete for a world championship this November at Hainan Island in China.
In addition to Hurley, Rachael is sponsored by Hobie, which sells a Rachael Tilly model longboard designed by legendary shaper Terry Martin. (Rachael and Terry were close friends, and she spoke at his 2012 memorial.)
A stellar student who participates in church activities and swims for her high school team, Rachael has stayed grounded even as her surfing career has soared.
“I definitely plan on going to college. My education is as important to me as surfing is to me,” says Rachael, who plans to attend a school close to the beach so she can continue to compete.”
Check back here and on all our Social Media platforms often for more about Rachael Tilly and all her efforts in and out of the water.

Every week there is always something NeW and exciting in our shops…. and… I’m usually first in line to buy it! haha!! Seriously, if you have followed this blog, you know by now that they should just pay me in gift cards for our Hobie Surf Shops!! I have no ability to resist our buyers handiwork. Not like I want to resist it… I’d just like to be able to go one week with out going bonkers for style!!! But, that week is not this week… this week is destroying my will power, I have succumbed to the dark side and worn down the strip on the AMEX card. Let’s take a little stroll through my three favorites….
Hurley hits the beach workout market hard, right in it’s abs of steel!! Of the moment cuts in all their looks, ranging from sports bras (like the one above) priced at $29.50, fitness tank tops with shelf bras at $32, KILLER fitting capri pants at $49.50 and lots more.
The line is made to stand up to a hard workout. Using Nike Dri-Fit technological fabric in some of the looks, but at a way lower price point than you would see from Nike. I have worn the outfit above (hey… thats me!) to hot yoga twice since purchasing it, and it works great… and I get wildly sweaty in class. Like sweaty to where I can’t imagine that there is anything left to sweat out, so I must actually, at a certain point, be sweating out my mat neighbors sweat. It’s gross. But, I look super cute in my styling Hurley workout gear, so I don’t care!!
Maaji’s Swim Line with Planting an Ocean of Trees Program
Our friends at Maaji Swimwear are continuing their “Ocean of Trees” campaign this year! Last year they planted over 30,000 trees, amazing! The idea is really quite simple. Each time you purchase a piece of Maaji swimwear, you take the code off the hang tag, go to Maaji online and register your own personal tree. The trees are being planted in Colombia. Not only do the trees provide oxygen to the whole planet, but the planting process provides jobs to the local communities in Colombia. Such a win-win!! Check out this short video they made from last year’s campaign….
Such a simple and caring idea. Not only do they make incredible suits, with the best prints in the water, they care about the area their bikinis are made in and the people making them. You can shop the latest collection in our Hobie Surf Shops and in our Online boutique:: Here. Glorious!! <3
Silver Spoon Jewelry Just in Time for Valentine’s Day
LoVE is in the air sweeties! Valentine’s Day is on it’s way and we have a full restock of our lovely Silver Spoon jewelry line. Designer, Jennifer Northup, was inspired to design these looks after inheriting her great grandmother’s silverware collection. Timeless and so so so romantic. I die for the band rings. They are nice and big, but created in delicate filigree to stay very feminine. So pretty!! They are available in shops now.
Thanks for virtual shopping with me. <3

Good morning and happy glorious Monday!!! Hope everyone is full of Holiday spirit!! We are, and our team especially is.. the shops are decorated and looking beautiful, and our team is looking gorgeous too!! Even the ugliest of ugly Christmas sweaters can not take the gleam out of our team. Anyone who shops at our Hobie Surf Shops knows, we have the best looking, and nicest humans working for us!! But, did you also know all of our models in our Instagram photos (Follow us: HERE! or by searching the username hobiesurfshop on your instagram account) are also our staff?
We truly believe that the best way to showcase the products we stock is to ask the staff to pick out their favorite “stuff” put it on/use it, and let us take a picture of it to share with you!! They ALWAYS have great ideas on how to put together the right look, and even better ideas on poses, locations, and vibe!! In other words, with out them, our social media Hobie Surf Shop world would be a serious snooze. ZzzzzZZZZzzzzzz. So we thank the team for being just that, a Team!!
Here are just a few of the pics we have done over the past few months… Click on any of them to enlarge and scroll through. Enjoy!!!
Monday… Glorious Monday! The swell looks like it might fill in as the week goes on… or so the surf report claims (one of these days I’m going to go on a rant on this blog about how many times the surf report is full of 2-4′ lies!! ;) ) and summer is starting to settle into my veins! Around this time every year, I want to layer on bright colored tops and kick around in white bottoms under our scorching desert sun… so I have been. It doesn’t even bother me that I have been totally abusing my Hurley 81 Leggings/Skinny Jeans in Stark White ($59 in shops and online) by wearing them at least 3 times a week (yup, I just admitted to that!!) EVERYWHERE. A book could be written on how good these fit.. no saggy butt, and especially no “coin slot” action either. **shudder** So, since my love for these amazing wardrobe staples runs deep, I asked Katie, the assistant manager at the Dana Point Hobie shop, to style three looks around my little white obsession.
**Before we get started, when you try these on, bring your usual size in and the size down. I’m usually a 5 and I wear a 3 in these.**
First Look: Window Shopping!
Two things I live for in the summer besides surfing and goofing off at the beach, are bright colors and window shopping! Katie toned down the bright turquoise of this lace tank by putting a mustard basic layer tank underneath. (Runway Lace tank $40, Basic Layer tank $12 in shops) Roll the leggings to 2″ above the ankle bone to show off the Roxy Antigua wood and bead sandals (in shops and online $39). Obviously no window shopping day is complete with out a big beach bag to fit all your buys like the Bucket Bag by Billabong (in shops $48) and a good pair of sunnies like the Lindsay’s by Kreed ($28 in shops). I wore this exact same look, except with a neon pink tank under the lace to make it wild bright, and my beat up Rainbow sandals because they are super broken in for a day of shopping.
Second Look: Laid Back Office
This look is for when you can’t let go of the summer fun, but you have to go get your office time on. Roll your Hurley’s up to hit right at the back of your shoe, try our Reef Ballet Strip ($56 in shops) for a big pop of color against the stark white. On top, keep with a bright color through summer, bright coral gives your skin glow even if you have been spending too much time under the fluorescent tubes instead of inside the watery tubes at the beach (Jolie knit sweater $32 in shops). Throw on a bubble necklace ($20 in shops), some oversized sunglasses that have a retro feel without looking like they came out of a prop shop (Mya’s by Hobie Polarized in shops and online $70), and an on trend cross body bag (Roxy Highway bag, $48 in shops) with fringe, and you will bring the sun inside to even the dimmest of office settings.
Third Look: Fall/Winter
This whole “No white after Labor Day” style rule has always irked me. Personally, I love the look of white in the winter, and I think you should wear what you love no matter what the fashion rule makers say! So, that said, here is the proper way to wear your white in the fall/winter.
Katie knocked it out on this look. I love when someone styles something and you want… no… you NEED the whole outfit!! She took the Nantucket boatneck striped sweater from Quiksilver ($49.50 in shops and online) and put the Bar Harbor blazer by Quiksilver over it ($84.50 in shops and online) and rolled the cuff to show the Burberry-esq plaid lining of the coat. For fall, grab your Hemp Vans ($52 in shops and online) and for winter, try the Olukai Holo Lio knee high boots ($270 in shops and online) in gray. And, just because it is overcast out, don’t forget to protect your eyes, the Emma’s by Hobie Polarized (in shops and online $70) have a nice cat eye feel!
I LoVED sharing this with you all, and I think we will do one or two of these a month… any thoughts on what “style staple” you would like to see worn three ways??? Leave a comment and let me know!! Happy Monday and happy shopping for white leggings!!
***Special Thanks to Ellesse from Hobie Dana Point for being our model!!
Every Wednesday night we highlight a Hobie Surf Shop team member and show you their must haves of the moment! Tonight, Kathleen and Kris from Hobie Dana Point are showing our basics some love! No big logos, no stripes, no glitter.. just solid, wearable with everything, wardrobe staples. Kathleen is wearing Quiksilver “Lorne” skinny jeans, a Jolie long sleeve top, and Vans “Authentic Low Pro’s” in a floral print. Kris is wearing a Hurley “Staple T”, RVCA “Stay RVCA” jeans, and classic Chuck Taylors. Stop in and say “Hi” and stock up on basics!!
Summer is finally here!!! The kids are out of school, the water in So Cal is warm (ok, it’s 68, but that is warm enough!), it’s suns out buns out at the beaches, and I have two things getting me all kinds of excited!!
First… We have a catalog!!! Thanks to the amazing Gina Falletta and Mo Barry’s late nights and incredible hard work, your little local darling surf shop by the name of Hobie has a glossy book available to help you jump into summertime! Exciting, yes??!!
Since I can never resist a little virtual shopping.. let me show you some of the picks!!
